Ataxic cerebral palsy is caused by damage to cerebellar structures, differentiating it from the other 2 forms of CP, which are spastic CP (damage to cortical motor areas and underlying white matter) and athetoid CP (damage to basal ganglia).

Sx
  • Intention (action) tremor, the most common manifestation, especially apparent when carrying out precise movements, e.g. tying shoe laces or writing with a pencil. Sx gets progressively worse as the movement persists, causing the hand to shake. As the hand gets closer to the accomplishing the intended task, the trembling intensifies, which makes it even more difficult to complete
  • Problems in coordination, specifically in their arms, legs, and trunk
  • Decreased muscle tone
Pathophysiology
  • There is damage to the cerebellum, which is essential for coordinating muscle movements and balance
Cause
  • Congenital, most commonly, like all forms of CP, resulting from erors in the development of the cerebellum and connexins during pregnancy
  • Acquired via meningitis or even by head trauma, although head trauma often leads to a traumatic brain injury
Tx
  • No cure, like all forms of CP
  • Tx can limit the negative effects of the condition
Epidemiology
  • It is seen in approximately 5-10% of all cases, making it the least frequent form of CP diagnosed
